After Nationalism: Being American in an Age of Division

Excellent book on sources of (and stories about) American identity. Goldman helpfully explains the three ways Americans have primarily understood their source of unity: covenant, creed, or crucible. He describes the origins, implications, and shortcomings of these different  symbols and suggests a new vision for sustaining unity in an increasingly pluralistic society.
