Markets & Morality

Markets & Morality supports Hope College students as they examine the interplay of market forces through the lens of moral thought, including the precepts of the historic Christian faith, and facilitates a rigorous conversation about whether markets can contribute to human flourishing.

Join Us

Hope College students:

Do you love to learn? Do you want to engage in an ongoing discussion of big ideas with similarly curious and thoughtful friends?

Applications for membership in Markets & Morality are typically available the first week of each school year and during a special “early decision” round in April of each year. All students are encouraged to apply. Those selected for membership commit to a year of involvement in twice-monthly reading discussions and other events.

Throughout the year, we welcome other interested students to become “Friends of M&M.” Friends receive personalized updates on upcoming events and are included in many of the larger events M&M attends on and off campus.

Supporters and community members:

Markets & Morality is made possible entirely through the generous contributions of our donors. If you’d like to lend your financial support, please fill out the form and Dr. Estelle can help direct your tax-deductible gift.

If you’d like to get involved in any of these ways, contact Dr. Sarah Estelle below or at estelle@hope.edu.

Why Econ is for Lovers? Sarah’s work—and this website—isn’t just about her love for econ and a desire to share it, but rather that economics, as a tool of prudence, can help us to facilitate the Good of the other, that is to love well. (This slogan is also a whimsical reference to Sarah’s grad school home in Charlottesville as it echoes Virginia’s classic state tourism motto.)
